American College of Gastroenterology

Founded in 1932, the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) is an organization with an international membership of more than 10,000 individuals from 80 countries.  The College is committed to serving the clinically oriented digestive disease specialist through its emphasis on scholarly practice, teaching and research.  The mission of the College is to serve the evolving needs of physicians in the delivery of high quality, scientifically sound, humanistic, ethical, and cost-effective health care to gastroenterology patients.

The ACG is committed to providing accurate, unbiased and up-to-date health information. Visit the ACG Web site at www.acg.gi.org to access educational resources for patients and their families spanning the broad range of digestive diseases and conditions - both common and not-so-common. Organized by disease, state and organ system, these educational materials, developed by ACG physician experts, are offered for the information and benefit of patients and the public.

The World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO)

WGOis a federation of 109 national societies and 4 regional association of gastroenterology representing over 50 000 individual members worldwide. Formed in 1935 and incorporated in 1958, WGO was originally known as Organisation Mondiale de Gastroénterologie (OMGE) and renamed in 2006.

The mission of WGO is to promote, to the general public and health care professionals alike, an awareness of the world wide prevalence and optimal care of digestive disorders through the provision of high quality, accessible and independent education and training. The WGO annually celebrates the 29th May as World Digestive Health Day (WDHD) focusing on a particular gastroenterology theme.

National Institute for Diabetes, Digestive & Kidney Diseases (NIDDK)

At the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD.  This federal health agency offers a comprehensive booklet on IBS as well as other resources for patients on digestive health topics.  http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/ibs/index.htm  They also sponsor a telephone hotline 301-654-3810 through the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, NDDIC.

International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (IFFGD)

A nonprofit education and research organization offering online resources for gastrointestinal (GI) disorder information, support, and assistance. www.iffgd.org

IBS Self Help and Support Group

An online community of people with IBS offering support, blogs and information. www.ibsgroup.org
